Our CPU is a bottleneck in X-Plane VR. As it turns out, X-Plane continues the FSX tradition of being an absolute CPU hog. All four cores maxed out while the GPU’s only running at 30%. From what we’re reading online, it’ll take a 5 GHz CPU overclock to get stable framerates in VR with very high settings, but we’ve found ways to mitigate it while still getting amazing results. Just....holy smokes I can’t even describe how awesome it is.
The immersion is absolutely insane. Wanna check your airspeed? Just look down. Trying to find the runway? just crane your neck towards the windscreen a bit. I’ll even swap my throttle controller and my joystick with each other to better emulate the aircraft I’m flying. When the headset is adjusted correctly I’ve found the lines between reality and the game to blur a bit (especially after taking the headset off, my body feels like it should be flying). My landings are also exponentially better in VR and I was already pretty good at landing planes.
I especially like X-Plane’s damage system as it makes it a lot easier to replicate historic aviation accidents than FSX’s system. Lately I’ve been trying to land a 737 with a single engine and failed elevator controls. I’ve also been trying to land a 737 at Lukla...albeit unsuccessfully.
I now want to experience every game in VR. :D

I’ve been flying fighter jets in DCS World for a while now. And it’s just as exciting today as it was when I started. I’m on the edge of my seat waiting for the F-14, and insanely excited for the F-16 that *might* come out this year.
Oh, and the MiG-19 that should be out before the end of the month!

Any idea why it’s pegging the CPU and not the GPU? Isn’t this kinda stuff exactly why they never adopted discrete GPUs to begin with?

All four cores

four cores
My god. It’s time to enter the modern age

I can’t say my setup is anywhere near that nice. I’m running X-Plane on my laptop and using an X-BOne controller and the keyboard. Then again, I’m just using it to get familiar with landmarks and landing procedures.

Sell th e Buell and get a threadripper. Problem = solved.

1950X? Amateur hour. 2990wx or bust.

I sold the Buell six months ago. D:

You’re already a million steps ahead of me in real life though. :)

At that price, just get an Epyc.

It largely depends on how a game is built . From what I can tell, Laminar Research doesn’t have the resources to make a sim that is both hyper-realistic and also optimized to run at high settings on a “potato masher” . And reading a blog from one of their devs, it’ll be an extremely long time (if ever) before X-Plane can utilize the advancements found in RTX cards.

That seems backwards somehow, on the part of the Laminar Research . I’d assume maxing out the GPU would be priority... Thanks for the rundown, tho! I’m so far removed from the gaming world it’s sad.

I’ m sort of surprised... X-plane is really more of a phyiscs engine that happens to b e displaying a flight simulator, so it *is* highly compute intensive from a number-crunching point of view, but I’d think they would be trying to offload as much to gpgpu compute as possible...

Right? T hat’ s what would assume as well.

Their minimum system requirements are surprisingly low in general, a dual core i3 and a 512MB DX11 card (which would have been low-end 10 years ago). I was wondering if maybe they kept as much as possible on the CPU to run on Intel’s integrated graphics, but it looks like they do require a discrete solution, at least officially.

That’s really cool! I remember back in the day my best friend and I got into FS95, at one point I had a 22 inch monitor, a 14 inch monitor and a TV all hooked up to the same computer with a myriad of video cards and connection varieties, it was a hilarious setup, but it was a ton of fun!

Give war thunder a try. It has a simulator mode and I’m pretty sure supports VR.
F ree to play too.

The problem there is that most GPGPU scenarios don’t also include running a game on top of it.

Stream X-plane VR gameplay for threadripper monies.
